Work: turning a necessary daily task into an opportunity

For me, January is an especially harrowing month at work. Work is more complicated due to yearly policy changes. Every year, the workload is noticeably heavier, the goals are set impossibly higher, and the budget cuts are unbelievably deeper. The past weeks, I have come home physically drained from work. Luckily, physical exhaustion is an easy fix with a good diet, exercise, and sleep. Nothing is free in life and work is a mean to support and further my life journey.

However, I refuse to let work mentally and/or emotionally exhaust me and deviate me from inner peace along my life path. I find that mental and emotional exhaustions require more time and effort for recovery compared to physical exhaustion. It is best to prevent mental and emotional exhaustions and face them immediately head-on, rather than let them deteriorate the spirit and erode inner peace. It is all too easy to let myself be consumed by work and deviate from being at inner peace due to distractions from work. Over half of my 24 hours, the time currency of living, is already spent on work and sleep. I find that my workday is more meaningful, when I make use of each moment to practice and apply The Teaching. My work is an opportunity for reflections and a hands-on opportunity for me use wisdom and compassion to overcome challenges within myself.

The last two weeks at work has been especially arduous. I face each workday with conscious efforts to not waste the practical opportunity provided by challenges. I tried to be especially more compassionate, empathic, and serene during the difficult moments, when dealing with others. It can be quite challenging.

However, finding kindness and being empathic during a difficulty does go a long way to help me let go of anger and frustrations from the event. Viewing the challenge and the other person in a compassionate and empathic light helps to diffuse my inner frustrations by altering my point-of-view. Altering my own emotionally state from anger and frustra
tions to compassion and empathy did result in the hinderance neither handicapping me nor weighing me down mentally and emotionally. Hopefully, my being kind and empathic to those who bring challenges into my life shall make-better his/her life so that he/she may also pay it forward. Maintaining a clear outlook and facing work challenges using compassion, empathy, and The Teaching is the most practical method to stay on course along my life path. I may come home physically tired, but emotionally and mentally, I am still fresh and ready for life.

"I negate the challenge by focusing on what really matters: my inner peace."

Whenever I find myself feeing stressed and overwhelmed from my challenging workload, I take a step back, take deep breaths, and c
lear my mind. It only takes a moment to re-group, re-strategize and change my outlook and the course of an event. I negate the challenge by focusing on what really matters: my inner peace. I remind myself to not waste any precious moment not being at peace. I feel that being more compassionate, empathic, and focusing on being at inner peace, during the challenging times at work, help to empower me be more naturally at ease along my
life path.

It is only when One recognise that both permanence and impermanence are confined within Karmic life’s innate duality, that One is ultimately set free from discriminating thoughts.
